Techno-portable

Suite au récent congrès Trends from Mobile World, ce billet sur Stephen's Lighthouse présente en 30 points les tendances en matière de téléphonie et d'usage des technologies dites mobiles pour les prochaines années. Voici les 5 premiers.

1. Voice will not be the dominant form of electronically mediated communication in the future. It will stay static as new forms - even beyond texting and SMS take over. Jetson style videophones are already here (including my new one).
2. Mobile will have a large component of asynchronous voice messaging including threaded discussions using v-mail technologies. Timed v-mail as well as mobile v-blogging will be common.
3. Mobile devices will be most individuals' primary electronic device used for their calendar, voice and e-mail, small scale video, learning, surfing, search, GIS, etc. - basically most everything. This moves the virtual world from home or office-based computing to truly personal computing.
4. GIS features will be key to the growth of mobile applications. 3D maps of your local area, context sensitive ads and coupons, smart mobs, political rallies, etc. will all come to popular consciousness. Search and local apps will be GIS sensitive.
5. Search on the mobile will be the fastest growing app in the next five years. It is already a major feature of Apple iPhones (as I noted on this blog recently) and other digital phone companies are well advised to catch up.

A propos de Skype

7 things you should know about Skype (Educause):

"Skype is an application that turns a personal computer into a telephone. Skype uses voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) technology, which converts voice signals into data streams that are sent over the Internet and converted back to audio by the recipient’s computer. Although Skype is not the only company that offers VoIP services for consumers, it functions on a P2P model rather than as a centralized application. With the P2P model, users download a piece of software that allows computers to communicate directly with one another, without having to be routed through a central location. This decentralized model allows Skype to function as a robust, distributed medium for communication. The service allows communication between Skype-equipped devices, which is free, or between a Skype device and a conventional telephone for relatively modest fees. Skype offers features such as voicemail and call forwarding, and the service also now supports video communication."

Networked Media of the Future

Networked Media of the Future (oct. 07)
(Source: UE, Networked Media Task Force)

"This white paper is intended for identifying future research challenges in Networked Media. Availability of information at all places is becoming crucial to the development of modern day society. In addition, information is already available in the form of various media such as audio, video and text. Furthermore, in the Networked Media of the future all the elements of the media value chain will have a network capacity attached to them. Not only does it mean that all devices and multimedia content will be network-enabled but it also means that users and providers will participate and collaborate actively in a community network. The paper focuses on three main axes of future progress – true broadband support, personalized media, and distributed control."

"This document produced by the three Networks of Excellence in the area of Networked Media funded under the EC Framework Programme 6 (VISNET-II1, INTERMEDIA 2 and CONTENT 3 ), provides a comprehensive vision on the
Networked Media of the future and the long term research challenges involved. It will provide a framework for industry, academia, governments and citizens to act together in order to find the responses to the associated challenges providing socially acceptable solutions."
