"It is crucial to the future of cataloging to find collaborative ways to take advantage of publisher ONIX metadata, and we must find efficient and centralized ways to store, enhance and normalize the metadata for the benefit of both library and publishing communities," said Renee Register, OCLC Global Product Manager, Cataloging and Metadata Services.

Un projet qui sera conduit par l'OCLC à partir de janvier 2008.

RLG Programs Descriptive Metadata Practices Survey Results (une enquête de l'OCLC).

"We selected the 18 survey participants from RLG partners in the United States and the United Kingdom because they had “multiple metadata creation centers” on campus that included libraries, archives, and museums and had some interaction among them.
Each institution was asked for a list of contacts responsible for creating metadata across its campus. We requested representatives from libraries, archives, special collections (if separate from a library), museums, institutional repositories, digital library programs, or any other site that creates metadata to describe information resources that a researcher, student, or teacher would want to access."

"[ce rapport] s’appuie sur deux enquêtes statistiques:
* une enquête menée auprès d’un échantillon de directeurs de bibliothèques aux Etats-Unis
* une enquête de public menée auprès de 6.100 personnes dans six pays: Etats-Unis, Canada, Grande-Bretagne, France, Allemagne, Japon." (nicomo)

SearchEngineWatch signale que le rapport de l'OCLC présentant les résultats d'une enquête effectuée l'année passée sur quelques centaines d'étudiants est disponible.

SEW pointe quelques chiffres:

"They preferred searching on Google or Yahoo versus their college library systems, based on the attributes of: speed (90%); convenience (84%); ease of use (87%); cost-effectiveness (71%); and reliability (63%). Libraries, however, won on more trustworthy measures including credibility (77%) and accuracy (76%)."

Rien de bien neuf, et le problème est encore et toujours dans nos Opacs et la mauvaise visibilité/accessibilité des/aux ressources électroniques (le parcours du combattant pour arriver au pdf d'un article après des errements dans l'Opac, les plateformes des agrégateurs ou celles des éditeurs).

Moins marrant (en ce qui me concerne):

"And, as for those people sitting behind the library desk, here's your wake-up call. It turns out that over two-thirds (67%) of students believe that librarians performed either the same as or worse than the engines. Even though librarians were valued and considered helpful, they apparently don’t compare to indices and algorithms."

Là, évidemment, c'est à nous de faire la preuve de notre valeur ajoutée spécifique... Sur ce, bon travail...
