Métadonnées: état des lieux et avenir

Metadata for Digital Libraries: State of the Art and Future Directions (pdf) (source: JISC) An overall framework for a digital object's metadata can be provided by either METS or DIDL, although the wider acceptance of the former within the library community makes it the preferred choice. Descriptive metadata can be handled by either Dublin Core or the more sophisticated MODS standard. Technical metadata, which is contingent on the type of files that make up a digital object, is covered by such standards as MIX (still images), AUDIOMD (audio files), VIDEOMD or PBCORE (video) and TEI Headers (texts). Rights management may be handled by the METS Rights schema or by more complex schemes such as XrML or ODRL. Preservation metadata is best handled by the four schemas that make up the PREMIS standard. Identifying the need for greater understanding of some of the key issues involved in identity management, it also calls for improved documentation and standards, greater awareness and training amongst staff and the introduction of regular audits to ensure implementation of appropriate measures across the institution". - Report on levels of assurance: "Levels of assurance (LoAs) are about how much proof is needed of an individual’s identity to access online resources; whether via a simple user name and password or a more complex system of biometrics and tokens". E-books: observatoire national

Voilà, une fois de plus, l'exemple vient du JISC. Un projet national - en Grande-Bretagne donc - prévoit de mettre à la disposition des étudiants de toutes les universités anglaises une collection d'e-books représentatifs de diverses disciplines. Pourquoi? La réponse en anglais dans le texte: "JISC has funded a collection of e-books that will be freely available to students in all UK universities. The aim of the JISC national e-books observatory project is to gather much needed evidence: * Evidence for publishers about the impact of e-books on traditional print sales to students * Evidence for publishers about how to create exciting e-books that will engage the digital native * Evidence for publishers and libraries about the pricing models for the future * Evidence for libraries about how to promote the use of e-books The e-books, chosen, include some of the most popular texts in Business and Management Studies, Medicine, Engineering and Media Studies."
