"The goal of the Open Library Environment Project (OLE Project) was to design a next-generation library system that breaks away from print-based workflows, reflects the changing nature of ibrary materials and new approaches to scholarly work, integrates well with other enterprise systems and can be easily modified to suit the needs of different institutions. The project planners went beyond designing for incremental improvement of current Integrated Library Systems (ILS’s). They also viewed the role of library business technology systems to bemore than purchasing and providing access to collected materials. The project planners chose to define a system that supports libraries as a central player in the research process. [...]"

"OLE is both more and less than a traditional ILS. OLE goes beyond an ILS through its ability to utilize other systems and deliver valuable new services. At the same time, OLE allows institutions to avoid redundancy of data, and reduce purchase and integration of add-on components to their current ILS in order to carry out library business. Finally, OLE places the library’s business in context within the fabric of the institution and the research process, rather than keeping it a separate, siloed operation. [...]"

Integrated Library System (ILS) Challenges and Opportunities: A Survey of U.S. Academic Libraries with Migration Projects

"An online survey was sent to academic libraries and consortia with an integrated library system (ILS) migration project, based on review of press releases from major U.S. ILS vendors. This study takes a systematic approach to provide a snapshot of the academic ILS market and key factors affecting the outcome of an ILS migration project. It reveals the challenges and opportunities facing academic libraries and ILS vendors in an environment with rapidly changing technology and increasingly sophisticated academic users."

eXtensible Catalog (XC)

"The eXtensible Catalog Project is pleased to announce that we have launched our new website at http://www.extensiblecatalog.org/. This new website will be the main vehicle for distributing our open-source software once it is released in 2009. In the mean time, the website contains a wealth of information regarding the project, including publications, an overview of the software we are developing and the technologies that software will use, and a blog that has already been in use.
The eXtensible Catalog (XC) Project is working to design and develop a set of open-source applications that will provide libraries with an alternative way to reveal their collections to library users. XC will provide easy access to all resources (both digital and physical collections) across a variety of databases, metadata schemas and standards, and will enable library content to be revealed through other services that libraries may already be using, such as content management systems and learning management systems. XC will also make library collections more web-accessible by revealing them through web search engines."

"Cette étude comparative des principaux SIGB libres identifie d’abord les SIGB libres qui sont véritablement des logiciels libres dont leur communauté est vivante et présente des éléments de viabilité et de pérennité. Les SIGB libres identifiés sont ensuite évalués selon le nombre de fonctionnalités disponibles et la qualité d’implantation de celles-ci dans une grille de 797 spécifications regroupées en catégories et en modules. Cette méthodologie scientifique éprouvée permet de faire ressortir les forces et les faiblesses de chaque SIGB libre. Koha est le SIGB libre qui démontre le plus de potentiel, de vitalité et pérennité. Il est aussi le plus achevé, suivi de près par Evergreen qui démontre également un grand potentiel de vitalité et de pérennité et par la qualité de l’implantation de ses fonctionnalités, puis par PMB qui ne démontre pas autant de vitalité que souhaité et par ses fonctionnalités orientées Web 2.0 et services Web."

Le cahier des charges est un préalable à tout projet informatique. Etude de l’existant, analyse des besoins, spécifications des caractéristiques fonctionnelles, cadre juridique: autant d’aspects qu’il faut maîtriser pour un projet réussi.

Le groupe de travail du DLF (Digital Library Federation) "ILS Discovery Interface Task Force" a publié un document de recommandations relatives à l'intégration d'applications externes (external discovery applications) avec les Sigb/Opac.

The public interfaces currently provided by most ILS's cannot by themselves meet the demands of users in a world where the availability and sophistication of digital resources and web applications has increased significantly. This does not simply reflect badly designed interfaces; it reflects the fact that users now need a wider variety of capabilities than any one software package can be expected to provide. At the same time, the bibliographic data and services that the ILS manages are crucial for the effective use of libraries. These trends imply that the ILS needs to become a platform that supports appropriate interfaces for discovery applications living on top of it, instead of trying to do everything for the user on its own.
