A Guide For the Perplexed: Libraries & the Google Library Project Settlement
(source: Association of Research Libraries)

"On October 28, 2008, Google, the Authors Guild, and the Association of American Publishers announced the settlement of the litigation concerning the Google Library Project. Under the project, Google has been scanning into its search database millions of books provided by major research libraries and other sources. For those books not in the public domain, the publishers and authors claimed that Google’s scanning infringed their copyrights. The settlement still requires the approval of the presiding judge in the US district court in New York because the case was brought as a class action on behalf of all affected rightsholders.
The settlement presents significant challenges and opportunities to libraries. This paper does not explore the policy issues raised by the settlement. Rather, it outlines the settlement’s provisions, with special emphasis on the provisions that apply directly to libraries. The settlement is extremely complex (over 200 pages long, including attachments), so this paper of necessity simplifies many of its details. This paper should not be treated as legal advice, and libraries considering joining the settlement should retain counsel to advise them on the settlement’s intricacies. Page references to the agreement are included in parentheses."

The Espresso Book Machine, a book-printing machine described as “the ATM of books,” goes online at Michigan’s library Oct. 1. Michigan says it’s the first university to install the machine.
Just about any digitized, out-of-copyright book from Michigan’s collection can be printed and bound on the spot. Printing takes five to seven minutes, and the cost is about $10 per book. Users will also be able to print books from online sources such as the Open Content Alliance. The Espresso’s manufacturer, On Demand Books, wants to create a network of machines in libraries and bookshops around the world, allowing users to print books from collections anywhere. Within a rapidly changing technological and cultural environment libraries are often tasked to do more than ever before. The Quality Library: a Guide to Staff-Driven Improvement, Better Efficiency, and Happier Customers, by Sara Laughlin and Ray W. Wilson, offer librarians advice and tools to deal with these challenges.
Libraries today face three significant challenges. These are increased competition for limited funding, escalating customer expectations, and rapidly changing and complex technological environments. The authors advocate for librarians to review their process and adopt a rigorous examination of their processes. By using a logical methodology and analyzing measurable data, librarians can examine library processes in an efficient and logical manner. The authors proceed to describe the theory of process analysis and give several real-world examples."

Sur Amazon.fr

The first chapter provides an introductory overview of research by Dr Kirsty Williamson (author of Research Methods for Students, Academics and Professionals: Information Management and Systems) and this sets the scene for the rest of the chapters where each author explores the key aspects of a specific method and explains how it may be applied in practice. The methods covered include those representing qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. Both a chapter on the topical evidence-based practice approach, and another critiquing it, are also included. The final chapter points the way towards potential new directions for the burgeoning field."

Via ILW

This rift has continued to deepen as Information Science has made its way into both the names and curricula of library education, and, in the last decade, some of those charged with leading schools that now fancy themselves as Information Schools have on occasion become shrill in proclaiming dominance in these programs. While some faculty members in accredited programs, have not been happy about this trend, only a few have spoken loudly in opposition to it.
In this book, Bill Crowley has taken to the pulpit in an effort to make the argument that we as a profession must concern ourselves with the dominance of our education programs by people who characterize themselves as information scientists. It is Crowley's view that we have now populated the faculty of these schools with a large number of people who do not hold doctorates in library science (like Crowley) and who also do not have much experience working as librarians. This essay is opinion that these educators are treating Library Science at best, as if it were a subordinate discipline to information science, and, at worst, as if it is a legacy discipline that is holding information science back from gaining acceptance as the major information provider in their community. Crowley cites Blaise Cronin from Indiana and Val King at Michigan who argue that major elements of library science are no longer particularly valuable. They and their supporters argue that library practitioners need to leave decisions about curriculum to the information science faculties as they create a serious academic discipline capable of educating tomorrow's information future rather than libraries wedged in the past."

Sur Amazon.fr
