- Exploring the future of academic libraries: A definitional approach
(source: The Journal of Academic Librarianship, 02/04/09 / sur abonnement)
"The central argument of the article is that while the building, the collection and the staff were inseparably linked, in a digital environment these facets of the library are diverging. This divergence clouds the process of envisioning a future for the library, but, if properly defined, it is a source of clarity, which sheds light on strategic opportunities."

(source: JISC, 07/04/09)
"In this podcast Michelle Pauli speaks with Sarah Thomas (The Bodleian’s Librarian and Director of Oxford University Library Services) & Professor Robert Darnton (Director of the Harvard University Library) about their views on the library of the future. Sarah and Robert are two of six panellists who took part in the ‘What is the library of the future?’ debate in Oxford during April."

- ALA Connect
"ALA Connect replaces the existing Online Communities service that ALA currently offers as a virtual, collaborative, workspace online. A few member groups have been using Communities, but it wasn't widely adopted, so we've revamped it using new software called Drupal. We hope this will become a centralized space where official ALA groups can work together online. In addition, any member can create new communities (unofficial ALA groups) without any staff assistance, so the site will combine association work with communities of interest in one place."
Outil que manifestement nous serions bien en peine d'offrir, même dans notre petit contexte franco-belge... Nous n'y parvenons déjà pas au sein d'une seule institution, alors pensez au niveau de plusieurs...

"As many of you may know, the Library of Congress recently underwent a reorganization of their cataloguing and acquisition departments. From my understanding, they have also physically reorganized their departments so that cataloguers with similar expertise are sitting together (and perhaps with the acquisitions expert in that area?). In essence, they have broken into physical “teams” grouped together by expertise and collections."

- Upside Down Org Chart: Better Way to Support Employees?
(source: Future Changes, 25/02/09 / via M. Farkas)
"That’s what Aaron Swartz discusses in a new essay on his blog, Raw Thought: A better way to think of a manager is as a servant, like an editor or a personal assistant. Everyone wants to be effective; a manager’s job is to do everything they can to make that happen. The ideal manager is someone everyone would want to have.
This sounds good, but how would one make it happen?
Instead of the standard “org chart” with a CEO at the top and employees growing down like roots, turn the whole thing upside down. Employees are at the top — they’re the ones who actually get stuff done — and managers are underneath them, helping them to be more effective. (The CEO, who really does nothing, is of course at the bottom.)
The notion of employees needing to be “managed” is outdated. Often, when employees aren’t doing their best work, it’s because the environment isn’t designed to help them. To do their best work, employees need flexibility, support, access to resources, and the ability to move as quickly as possible without being restricted by unnecessary bureaucracy. [...]"

- The Hardest Part of Being a Librarian
(source: ACRLog, 09/04/09)
"Occasionally, though, I am reminded what the most stressful part of being a librarian is for me. It’s not working with technology, it’s not having to constantly think on my feet, and it’s not the myriad other job duties: it’s working with difficult patrons. By “difficult,” I mean people who come to the library with chips on their shoulders, who are stressed because they are failing a class or have not gotten enough sleep, or who simply enjoy being in a power position and abusing whoever is sitting at the service desk. It is easy to blame superficial reasons for why people behave this way –- it’s the Millennials, the google mentality, etc. etc. — but I am sure there are studies linking stress and aggression and rudeness. The trick for the librarian is not to take it personally and not to redirect it at others."

- [livre] Library Blogging
(source: Coombs, Karen A. and Jason Griffey, Linworth, 2008)
"Blogging is an increasingly popular way for libraries to announce and promote events and news, highlight new titles and materials in their collections, publish book reviews, and interact with and engage patrons in dialogue. Library Blogging is not only an easy to understand how-to guide that helps get libraries up to speed on blogging, but it also discusses reasons for blogging, as well as providing both real-world and inspirational examples. It includes well-illustrated examples and instructions, tips, and pointers, providing step-by-step instructions and help for libraries starting up a blog. Library Blogging includes information about the software needed to set up a blog, as well as a focus on best practices and expectations. This is an excellent introduction to blogging, especially as it relates to libraries, and will be of interest to any library staff interested in blogging by libraries or in starting their own library blog."

"Learning Spaces"

ARL Learning Space Pre-Programming Tool Kit, Oct. 2008 [PDF]
(source: Association of Research Libraries, oct. 08)

"Research libraries have a large and growing commitment to deliver new or improved learning spaces for their primary users. The most-targeted user is the undergraduate student. Information commons and learning commons have become virtual “must haves” for libraries seeking to refresh and deepen their engagements with undergraduate learners. And new constituencies beckon.

While it is tempting to mimic space solutions delivered by other libraries, such appropriation circumvents staff-owned discovery processes that create a deep understanding of what is being built. The best implementations of informal learning spaces are “home grown,” reflecting deep understanding of populations being served. And smart pre-programming assessment techniques, with their focus on tapping into user wisdom, learning habits, and research needs, provide a helpful framework for identifying needed solutions.

This tool kit enables library staff—without reliance on outside experts—to conduct pre-programming assessment and customize their learning spaces to fit their local circumstances. The kit includes an overview of the planning process for building a learning commons as well as easy-to-use, one- to two-page guides to implementing a dozen different pre-programming assessment techniques. The techniques have been tested in several libraries and consistently produce excellent data for developing informed building programs."

A propos des espaces publics

Guide For Planning Higher Education Library Spaces est un wiki maintenu par l'Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) et la Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA).

In response to frequent inquiries for information about planning academic library buildings, the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) have joined forces to provide a basic framework for architects, planners, and librarians embarking on planning and design of libraries for higher education. College and research libraries present increasingly complex challenges based on:
* Providing and storing information in a multitude of formats and venues
* Storing information in a variety of ways
o Open versus closed stacks
o Remote storage
o Automatic retrieval systems
o Environmental concerns
* Complex building use patterns – sometimes 24/7 access
* Provision of traditional services and expanded services such as media production and presentation facilities
* Students and faculty working in diverse collaborative ways
* Partnerships with other campus services such as information technology or centers for teaching excellence
* Student and faculty expectations for reliable, pervasive technology
* Shared space for seminars, lectures, art exhibits, concerts, and other campus functions

Chantier (3)
